WHAT'S DIFFERENT ABOUT THE AFFL YOUTH RULES COMPARED TO OTHER FLAG LEAGUES:

NOT

WHAT'S NOT CHANGING

  • Still 5on5, non-contact flag football fun for boys AND girls.
  • Can still play the sport we all love with your friends in your own town or a nearby one.
  • Still 2×20 min halves.
  • Still no blocking, no fumbles, no diving, no contact, so as safe a sport as ever.
  • Will still have fun tournaments.

IS

WHAT IS CHANGING

  • New jerseys with town league logo, numbers on jersey and names (names optional)
  • Max 12 players per team.
  • 2 referees per field.
  • QB can run the ball anytime a defender crosses the line of scrimmage.
  • Pitches and laterals are allowed.
  • No more 7 yd rush line (no more impeding the rush calls), the defender can be on the line of scrimmage and go in on 3 count OR Blitz from line (twice per half) 
  • 1,2 and 3 point conversions.
  • PRO style clock in last minute.
  • Throw offs.
  • Onside kicks (no actual kicks just one play, see below for explanation)
  • State Championships/National Championships/International Championships.

YOUTH

YOUTH RULES

  • 5-on-5, twelve-person roster
  • 40-minute game played over two 20-minute halves
  • Running clock until the last minute of the second half
  • The field is divided into two 25-yard boxes, and first down at the midfield
  • No blocking, kicking, or fumbles
  • 2 laterals behind the line of scrimmage, only one downfield

Post-Snap

  • Once the ball is snapped, the defense must wait three seconds to rush, and the quarterback will have a total of six seconds to release the ball or cross the line of scrimmage
  • The quarterback cannot run unless rushed
  • The defense can blitz two times per half without waiting three seconds
  • All players are eligible downfield
  • North/south handoffs not allowed but pitches and handoffs to east/west runners permitted.

Scoring

  • 6pts per TD
  • Teams will have distance-based options to convert PATs of 1, 2 or 3 points

Penalties

  • All penalties will not award yardage but rather an extra play, free play or loss of a play.
  • Ball will always go into play at the spot of the foul or the previous spot

ADULT

ADULT RULES

  • 7-on-7, 15 person roster
  • 60-minute game played over four 15-minute quarters
  • Running clock except for the final two minutes of the second half
  • Field divided into four 25-yard boxes, and first downs are awarded each time the offense reaches the next box
  • No blocking, kicking, or fumbles
  • Only one lateral allowed per play except for throw offs and punt returns

Post-Snap

  • Once the ball is snapped, the defense must wait two seconds to rush, and the quarterback will have a total of four seconds to release the ball or cross the line of scrimmage
  • The quarterback cannot run unless rushed
  • The defense can blitz five times per half without waiting two seconds
